19 and 26 September - Visitor Days in Teiču and Krustkalnu Nature Reserves

Madona region's green treasure! We are home to two of Latvia's four nature reserves - Teiču and Krustkalnu Nature Reserves. Those interested can see them only on visitor days, which are organized by the Nature Conservation Agency.

Teiču Nature Reserve, the largest moss bog in the Baltics, began forming 10,000-12,000 years ago. In conditions of excessive moisture, shallow lakes formed in low-lying areas of the terrain and gradually became overgrown. At present, the average thickness of the peat layer in the bog is 6-7 m, with a maximum of up to 9 m.
