I Am Orpheus

Orpheus - the mythical singer and lute player whose music had the power to move even the gods. Joel Frederiksen’s program "I Am Orpheus" focuses on songs from the English Renaissance and early Baroque, where love, longing, loss, and fate are revealed in a particularly personal and expressive way. The program features music by Robert Johnson (c. 1583–1633), Thomas Ford (c. 1580–1648), John Dowland (1563–1626), and other English composers.

Joel Frederiksen is an American bass and lutenist who is currently based in Munich, Germany. His musical activity ranges from performing as a solo artist to appearing with various early music ensembles. As a bass, Joel Frederiksen has performed with ensembles such as Vox Luminis, the Netherlands Bach Society, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, and Boston Camerata.

As a singer and lutenist, he is the artistic director and a member of Ensemble Phoenix Munich, founded in 2002. Together with the ensemble, he regularly performs worldwide and has made recordings for major music labels. His recordings on harmonia mundi France and SONY/Deutsche Harmonia Mundi have received numerous international awards, including the ECHO Klassik award.
