LATVIANS IN AMERICA
Rasa Bugavičute-Pēce • Director – Valters Sīlis
The Most Beautiful Week of the Summer
The play’s main character is adopted by a family in the USA as a teenager, and from an orphanage in Latvia she ends up in the land of dreams, America. However idyllic life may be in a small American town and however kind her foster family may be, her search for belonging is far from over. That is why this search leads her to the World Latvian Camp, where Latvians from all over the world gather to strengthen their Latvian roots. There she finds herself among the Latvians of America, which is a completely different world from the one from which her foster family took her.
The play will tell the story of the Latvian community in America, of the life in which they are just as much American citizens as everyone else, and of the world in which they are Latvians, and of the meaning that Latvian identity is given in this society. This play will allow Latvia and Latvian identity to be seen through different eyes, because for the characters of the play it is a unifying core, a shared awareness of something lost and irretrievable, yet very dear.
