On the eve of Christmas, Sounds of Liepāja at Rundāle Palace invite you to a concert in which the Berči Quartet, together with the chief conductor of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, clarinetist Guntis Kuzma, will present audiences with chamber music gems from the Romantic era.
At the center of the program is Johannes Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet - one of the most important chamber works from the composer’s late period. It was created at a time when Brahms had already decided to end his career as a composer, but the artistry of clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld inspired him to create music that has become one of the most significant works in the clarinet repertoire.
The quintet has the scope of Brahms’s symphonies, while at the same time its style is much more intimate and lyrical. Here Brahms speaks no longer to the public, but to his closest friends. The music weaves together painful nostalgia, bursts of anger and protest at times, playful humor, and enlightened peace.
Alongside Brahms will be Franz Schubert’s string quartet “Rosamunde” - one of the composer’s most poetic chamber works. It combines the melodic beauty characteristic of Schubert’s late works with a light melancholy.
The title of the work is borrowed from the theme of the second movement, which was used in the stage music for Helmina von Chézy’s play “Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus.”
Carl Maria von Weber’s Finale from the Clarinet Quintet at the end of the concert will allow the clarinet to reveal all the virtuosic splendor of its sound and will give the evening a sparkling energy.
