As Winston Churchill - Tālivaldis Lasmanis
"I am ready to meet my Maker, but whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter" - said with his characteristic self-irony and sarcasm one of the most notable and imposing British statesmen and politicians, Winston Churchill (1874-1965). He not only drank whisky and smoked a Cuban cigar, but in his own time advocated the idea of the European Union, coined the term "iron curtain," and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his nation-inspiring speeches and memoirs. Self-made man* - from a stammering boy to a decisive strategist, never giving up his human weaknesses either.
The play Churchill (2015) by American actor and playwright Ronald Keaton invites the audience into Winston Churchill's inner world. Giving in to his passion for painting, Churchill creates his own subjective biography, where historical annals and intimate moments dear only to him stand side by side.
"Ronald Keaton's play is an emotional story of a historical figure about the role of the individual in an era of global geopolitical upheaval. Parallels with today's processes allow us to look at it through the filter of history. It is an open conversation about the end of a politician's life, about old age and what was achieved in politics," says director Reinis Suhanovs.
