Interactive Digital Exhibition Clay Pixels at the Rothko Museum

Celebrating the 95th birthday of the Daugavpils-born artist Pēteris Martinsons, the Rothko Museum has created an interactive digital exhibition, Clay Pixels, where visitors can take part in interpreting the artist’s works.

The exhibition is based on five digitized Pēteris Martinsons ceramic works presented as 3D models. Contour images of these models are available in the exhibition area on special printed sheets. Museum visitors are invited to color them in and add their own version of the tower and crow motifs so closely associated with Martinsons.

Adding your work to the exhibition is very simple. The visitor scans the QR code on the sheet and follows the instructions - takes a photo of the colored outline drawing and uploads it, and the photo appears on the digital exhibition screen in 3D form alongside the work of other visitors.

The interactive digital exhibition Clay Pixels will be on view and can be added to at the Rothko Museum’s second floor until the end of 2026.

The exhibition was created with the support of the State Culture Capital Foundation by the Rothko Museum in cooperation with the association We Rock.

Pēteris Martinsons (1931-2013) was born in Daugavpils on 28 January 1931. He entered art history as the most internationally recognized Latvian ceramic artist of the 20th century, whose innovative creativity significantly changed the course of Latvian contemporary ceramics, steering it in a qualitatively different direction. The Rothko Museum holds an extensive collection of the artist’s works, and several hundred artworks from the collection are permanently on view in the museum’s ceramics exhibition space, Martinsons House. Since 2016, the Rothko Museum has hosted the international competition exhibition Martinsons Award as part of the Latvian Ceramics Biennale, honoring Martinsons’ contribution and affirming the vitality of the medium he cherished in today’s art scene.
