Quadrille | Sacha Guitry
Sacha Guitry's play "Quadrille" adapted for the stage
Recommended age: 14+
The famous Hollywood actor Karl Erickson is the sensation of the moment. Traveling through Paris, he enjoys undivided popularity and acclaim, but then he unexpectedly meets Polette, who gives him another name - that of her friend, journalist Claudine André. What is more, on that very day Karl Erickson has agreed to give an interview to journalist Claudine André and to the editor-in-chief of Paris's largest newspaper, Philippe de Morans, who, incidentally, is Polette's lover. But when he arrives at the Arena Theater in the evening, Karl is utterly astonished to see Polette on stage...
Quadrille is an old partner dance that was once very popular throughout Europe. Times and fashions change, but the very essence of the quadrille, in which the dancing pairs keep changing and you can never know who will dance with whom, is eternal in human relationships. We are quite used to love triangles, but when four people are dancing, things become much more complicated...
"The author of the play, Sacha Guitry, knows the theater inside and out. His comedies have no complicated plots, no didacticism, and no strict morality. Everything in them seems so airy, simple and elegant, light and witty. Exactly the qualities that so often are missing for us Latvians. The ones we look for when traveling to Paris, the most romantic and refined city in the world. The famed French lightness and ironic wit shimmer in this story like champagne bubbles in a glass." /Director Jānis Kaijaks/
Actor, playwright, screenwriter, theater and film director Sacha Guitry (1885-1957) is one of the brightest French stage personalities of the 20th century. "Quadrille" (1937) is the author's most popular play, which under Sacha Guitry's direction had its world premiere at the Orléans City Theater and was also adapted into a film in 1938, with the author himself playing Philippe de Morans.
