Opening of the exhibition «Where the Sun Rolls in Winter»
The main theme of the exhibition by French artist Martine Lafon (Martine LAFON, France) is the red skirts worn by women from some of the ethnic groups of Courland, especially the Suiti. Based on her study of ethnographic collections in Latvia, Martine Lafon has created a personal body of work that combines history, tradition, and modernity. The new works created as a result of this creative research will be exhibited at the Liepāja Museum.
The exhibition will include new works created by the artist inspired by the ethnography of Courland and Latvian scenes, especially Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga’s 2007 French-language edition of Logique de la poésie (The Logic of Poetry), dedicated to dainas. The Nīkrāce roll was created within the residency program “Notes in the Margins” while the artist was staying in Nīkrāce in 2025. The 7-meter-long artwork includes the artist’s research and impressions gained during her stay in Latvia. They mainly relate to the characteristics of textiles in the Courland region and the significance of the color red in them.
