New Century // FESTIVAL

DETLEF • NASTY SMILE • THE BRIEFING • DIVDIV

Almost thirty years have passed since a new generation of musicians grew up in the rehearsal rooms, basements and small concert venues of Liepāja. They listened to grunge, Britpop and alternative rock, started bands, wrote their own songs and created their own musical world.

It was a time that is often left out of wider stories about the history of rock music in Liepāja, but the music created by this generation and its influence have not disappeared anywhere.

On the evening of March 5, 2027, at the "JAUNAIS GADSIMTS" festival, four bands whose paths are connected in various ways to Liepāja's alternative music scene will meet.

DETLEF

One of the brightest Latvian alternative rock bands, whose roots can be found in the turn of the century music environment of Liepāja. The creative path of the leader of the group, Uldas Dirnen, began in the group "Euphoria", but Detlef's story continues to this day.

NASTY SMILE

A group that vividly describes the energy of the Liepāja alternative scene of the early 2000s, original music, concerts and its place in the LV rock music of that time.

THE BRIEFING

The band's musical path has experienced a significant transformation from an initially calm, jazz- and soul-influenced sound, through acid jazz to alternative rock and Indie. In this search for genres, The Briefing gradually created its own distinctive sound, which later moved from Liepāja and continued in the United Kingdom.

DivDiv

The group unites musicians from various Liepāja alternative scene groups. It is a natural manifestation of the continuation of this musical generation, confirming that the story of Liepāja's alternative rock music does not end with memories, but continues even today.

The festival is part of the project "Jaunais gadsimts", within the framework of which "Radio Liepāja" will create a cycle of five programs about the history of Liepāja's alternative rock music, conversations with musicians of that time, long ago or even never-heard recordings, memories and stories about the hitherto less documented phase of Liepāja's cultural history.
