Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

"Christmas Oratorio" parts 1, 4 and 3.

Johann Sebastian Bach's performance of the oratorio at Christmas, like this great master's passion concerts at Easter, has become an inseparable Christmas tradition in Europe's concert halls and churches. Although the story of Christ's birth remains unchanged in content and the bars of the oratorio are easy to recall, Bach's monumental opus always pours peaceful joy and sparkling delight into the hearts and minds of listeners. Bach composed the oratorio around Christmas 1734 and conceived its performance over six evenings, from Christmas to Epiphany. The oratorio excerpts assembled by conductor Kaspars Putniņš will allow audiences to experience both the story of Christ's birth and the unique enchantment of Bach's music.
