GRIBAS DRUSKU PABLĒŅOTIES

A concert performance for the whole family

Let’s play around so everyone can enjoy it!

The concert performance for the whole family GRIBAS DRUSKU PABLĒŅOTIES returns to its audience. It has become one of the most beloved productions in the history of the Riga Dome Girls’ Choir TIARA, leaving a vivid mark on the choir’s artistic work.

The production was first created in 2005, when conductor Aira Birziņa invited the directors of the animation studio DAUKA, Roze Stiebra and Ansis Bērziņš, to create together a song program featuring the most beautiful songs from Latvian animated films. The films made at studio DAUKA have become classics of Latvian animation art, distinguished by their kind spirit and their message about different values in life.

In the concert performance GRIBAS DRUSKU PABLĒŅOTIES, seventy-eight members of the Riga Dome Girls’ Choir TIARA sing, and dance. The production features joyful, dreamy, witty, warm-hearted songs full of kindness and sincerity from beloved studio DAUKA films for several generations of children, and adults too: KABATA, ZAĶĪŠU PIRTIŅA, ZELTA SIETIŅŠ, SĒD UZ SLIEKŠŅA PASACIŅA, NEPARASTIE RĪDZINIEKI, DESAS PIEDZĪVOJUMI, SAULE BRAUCA DEBESĪS, SIRDS LIKUMS, and others. The playful spirit is complemented by Albert Kivlenieks’s witty movement choreography created in 2005, now expanded and staged under the guidance of choreographer Egija Abaroviča. Alongside the singing and dancing, video fragments from the animated films are also shown on screen during the performance. At the end of the production, the young audience members are invited to join the choir and sing and dance together in the hall and on stage.

The performance features songs by Ingus Baušķenieks, Māris Jansons, Imants Kalniņš, Juris Kauķulis, Juris Kulakovs, Zigmars Liepiņš, Raimonds Pauls, Uģis Prauliņš and Valts Pūce, with lyrics from Latvian folk songs, as well as poetry by Aspazija, Pēters Brūveris, Rainis, Kārlis Skalbe, Andrejs Upīts, Ojārs Vācietis and other Latvian authors.

“It was the spring of 1975. Composer Imants Kalniņš, sitting at the piano and quietly humming to himself, played the first little song he had just written for the upcoming animated film ZELTA SIETIŅŠ. The brilliant arrangement by Jānis Blūms, the leader of the ensemble MENUETS, did not yet exist, and the ensemble MENUETS itself, which later recorded this music, was still only an idea, but the MUSIC was there. Wonderful music, subtle, harmonious, fragile and eerie at the same time, so perfectly suited to Rainis’s poem and its meaning: ‘Who looks through the mesh of the sieve / Sees the whole world sparkling in diamonds.’ That was how it all began. Beautifully and powerfully. Always keeping in mind the idea of heaven as a dominant presence in the rhythm of everyday life. Many, many animated films were created, whose special feature was SONG. Children who watched these films often sang along, sometimes even aloud, joining in a spontaneous choir. Now the music has been written down in notes specifically for singing in a choir, so that everyone, both young and old, can sing these songs. Sometimes, of course, remembering the lovely drawn creatures who in the animated films were the first to begin all this playfulness, which, one hopes, will never end,” the outstanding director Roze Stiebra (1942-2024) once said in gratitude to all who speak the language of music.
