KORĪGA, NŌNA: Light

The project-format choir Korīga, conducted by Laura Jēkabsone, and the professional string quartet NŌNA will join together in the concert program “Light” to offer musical reflections on light through the ages and across genres, taking the listener from the English Renaissance to contemporary creation. We seek light most intensely in the darkest time of the year, and it finds us in many forms as the light of God, the light of love, winter light, the light of the heart, the light of the mind, candlelight, the light of life. Music is a form that can embody and carry light in its widest variety of expressions.

In the concert program “Light,” audiences will experience several premieres: the new work “Winter Light,” created by the choir’s artistic director and composer Laura Jēkabsone especially for the collaboration between Korīga and the professional string quartet NŌNA, Laura Jēkabsone’s work “Lumen de lumine,” and Dace Mangulsone’s composition “Light.”

The concert program also includes several other compositions by Laura Jēkabsone and works by Thomas Tallis, James MacMillan, and Jake Runestad.

Korīga is a project-based choir founded in 2026, made up of experienced enthusiasts of choral music. The choir’s aim is to promote the creation and performance of high-quality, artistically innovative choral music, with special emphasis on new works by the choir’s artistic director and composer Laura Jēkabsone.

The string quartet NŌNA is a professional Latvian ensemble made up of violinists Līva Tomiņa and Dita Celitāne, violist Baiba Bergmane-Butāne, and cellist Tomass Ančs. The string quartet actively takes part in various musical projects and performs a wide-ranging repertoire.

The concert program “Light” will be presented in two concerts on December 5 at 5:00 p.m. at Ikšķile Evangelical Lutheran Church and on December 6 at 4:00 p.m. at Riga Jesus Evangelical Lutheran Congregation Church.

The concert program “Light” is supported by the State Culture Capital Foundation.
