LNSO, BRAHMS' FIRST AND MAHLER'S FIFTH
Andrejs OSOKINS - piano
Conductor Giedrė Šlekytė
Programme:
Johannes BRAHMS Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor
Gustav MAHLER Symphony No. 5
Johannes Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 1 is one of the most personal works of the Romantic era. It was written after the tragic death of Robert Schumann, and it intertwines grief, Brahms's unfulfilled feelings for Clara Schumann, and the young composer's unwavering determination to follow his own path.
Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphony, on the other hand, was created at the height of the composer's creative maturity. Monumental in scale and emotional range, it takes the listener from darkness to light, revealing Mahler's deeply personal world. This opus is one of the highest peaks of symphonic music, where overwhelming power alternates with extraordinary fragility and lyricism, including in the legendary Adagietto movement.
In the performance of these monumental works, two outstanding interpreters come together - Latvian pianist Andrejs Osokins and the internationally known Lithuanian conductor Giedrė Šlekytė.
