LOVE IS A STRANGER

A karaoke performance in one act

Do you remember how we were crossing the Vanšu Bridge back then and that hail started, and you began to cry, and I asked what was wrong, and you said that this was probably the happiest moment of your life?

And I felt unbelievably happy too, and that hail was flying into my face and my eyes, and you started running, and I ran after you, and you ran ahead of me, and I could hardly see you at all, the hail was so wild, but at the same time I knew that you were somewhere up ahead, because you were singing that self-invented song about Armageddon terribly loudly the whole time. And then we were already by the Presidential Palace, and you slipped and fell to the ground, and rolled around there a bit, and I jumped on top of you, and Dainis Īvāns walked past and pretended not to see us, and you pressed me to the ground, and we lay there spooning by that palace.

One evening, two young people decide to fix what they think is the greatest tragedy in the history of independent Latvia - their crumbling relationship.

“LOVE IS A STRANGER” is a bittersweet concert performance about universal weariness, moving memories, Latvian schlager songs and legendary hits, as well as another reality that cannot be imagined, and a hundred thousand complicated things that shape our history. Like an irritating goblin, they all roll over us and keep us from waking up.

Premiere:

• 06.12.2024.

*The performance is based on Klāvs Mellis’s play “Ludza Quadrille,” which was first staged in 2020 at Dirty Deal Theatre, directed by Paula Pļavniece, as part of the project “Triptych: Jack the Shooter, Skittles, Ludza Quadrille.”
