"The Gentle Monster" | RIGA IFF screenings at the Rothko Museum

On October 17 at 6: 00 PM, the international film festival RIGA IFF’s film showcase at the Rothko Museum will begin in the museum’s concert hall with a screening of award-winning director Marie Kreutzer’s film “The Gentle Monster.”

Award-winning Kreutzer, whom audiences came to love as the creator of the punk manifesto “Corsage” about Empress Sisi (2022), shakes Cannes in “The Gentle Monster” with an anatomy of a sexual predator, featuring the brilliant Léa Seydoux. Cutting slowly and sharply, the director drills down to the core: do we really know those closest to us, and can we protect our loved ones from those we do not know?

She is a pioneer of pop deconstruction with sold-out concerts, while he is a burned-out director trying to return to the routine of television. Wanting to protect her family, Lucy decides to move with her husband Phil and their nine-year-old son to the suburbs and turn over a new leaf in their marriage. Lucy’s mother, a legendary pianist, bitterly mocks rural and family life, because it is the worst thing a woman can do to her career. One morning, the police arrive and ask to confiscate smartphones and computers, and Lucy’s curtain of the known and unknown falls. How could she have lived for years with a person she did not know?

The film is like the bud of a poisonous plant - slowly, petal by petal, it unfolds its potential for evil. The illusion of idyll, crumbling into shards, awakens age-old fears of trust, dissolving in love.

The film will be shown in the original language with Latvian subtitles. Recommended for viewers aged 16 and up.
