Monika Korpa exhibition "Untitled No. 20"

Exhibition

About the exhibition, the artist says: "m - the 20th letter of the Latvian alphabet - becomes a sign in the artwork and the beginning of ten words that sound like 'commandments' for today. They are rooted in one language, yet their meaning stretches beyond its borders - as if these words were echoes of some older and greater language that unites all people. A language that needs no translation, because it speaks of what a person recognizes within themselves even before words. As in calligraphy, the words are 'written' again and again, as if illuminating them in our memory. The words become signs, and repetition becomes quiet reflection, until their meaning becomes present."

Monika Korpa, previously better known as Inese Monika Pormale, is one of Latvia's most internationally recognized set designers. The artist's works move people, reveal in the ordinary what had previously gone unnoticed, and connect seemingly unusual concepts.

Monika Korpa has collaborated with several renowned directors, including Alvis Hermanis, Elmārs Seņkovs, Gerda Lapoška, as well as Hungarian film, theater and opera director Kornél Mundruczó and German opera director Klaus Guth, who were named the best opera directors last season in Switzerland and Austria, respectively.

She has created set designs for productions in Latvia and at major European theaters, including in Geneva, Zurich, Berlin, Frankfurt, Vienna, Munich, Hamburg, Salzburg, Warsaw, etc.
