Concert Dedicated to Patriotic Week HOW A TINY ACORN BECOMES A MIGHTY OAK
An oak does not begin when, mighty and unshakable, it spreads its huge crown of branches toward the sky, giving shade, shelter, and a home to life. It begins very quietly, from a small acorn that does not yet know what it will become. The symbol of our nation’s strength, resilience, and belonging does not display its greatness. It simply grows. Quietly. Patiently. Strongly.
We too do not know at what moment something bigger than ourselves grows from a word, a song, a choice, or a dream.
In the concert story created by the chamber choir Cantus, “How a Tiny Acorn Becomes a Mighty Oak,” choir singers of different generations will meet, people with different memories and experiences, to sing Latvia together with musicians Kristīne Kalniņa, Marta Kristiāna Kalniņa, Edgars Kārkliņš, and the instrumental group, from folk songs to the songs of the Awakening period that became the voice of many generations, and further on to contemporary new works, because in Latvia’s story, song has always held a special place.
A song is like an acorn. It holds roots within itself. It contains time, human experience, joy and longing, hope and strength. It can lie dormant for years until someone lifts it up again and lets it sound. And then it is reborn, in another voice, in another time, in another generation, but with the same roots. What one generation lives through, the next can see with different eyes. What someone once protected, another continues to nurture. And what seems to have remained in the past sometimes suddenly returns and still finds its way to us.
It is continuity... and Latvia continues.
