The Maestro & European Pop Orchestra Christmas Show: 'When Classical Music Jokes!'
“The Maestro” in Riga for the first time: a Christmas show where even classical music jokes
Guido Dieteren, a musician from the fourth generation of conductors, his wife, opera soloist Wendy Kokkelkoren, and “The European Pop Orchestra” will present “Christmas Show: When Classical Music Jokes!” on 20 December at Xiaomi Arena in Riga - an evening of music, emotion, theatricality, and musical humor.
He grew up in a family where the conductor’s baton is passed down almost like a family heirloom. Guido Dieteren’s great-grandfather, grandfather, and father were conductors, while Guido himself became a conductor, violin soloist, arranger, and composer. The projects he has led have toured Europe, China, and North America, and according to his official biography, more than 2.8 million viewers have seen them at live concerts.
On 20 December, the musician known worldwide by the stage name “The Maestro” will arrive in Riga together with “The European Pop Orchestra” and his wife, opera singer Wendy Kokkelkoren. The only Christmas concert of this project in Latvia will take place at Xiaomi Arena - “Christmas Show: When Classical Music Jokes!”
The organizers emphasize: this will not be a traditional classical music evening. In the large arena show, popular and classical music will meet romance, energy, theatricality, the Christmas spirit, and one of the project’s defining features - musical humor.
A conductor who does not need a serious face as part of the job
“The European Pop Orchestra” combines the sound of a classical orchestra with the energy of a pop group. This makes it possible to move freely between genres - from classical and film music to world-famous pop hits. That is why their concerts resemble a dynamic musical performance rather than an academic orchestral concert.
Humor in this project is no accidental extra. Guido plays the violin himself, talks to the audience, plays around with the orchestra, teases the musicians, and blends professional precision with theatrical ease. At the moment when it seems that a serious symphonic climax is beginning, The Maestro can instantly turn it into a witty stage moment.
A fourth generation of conductors, but he writes his own rules
Guido Dieteren was born in 1974 in Limburg, the Netherlands. Music in his family was not a hobby, but a tradition: his great-grandfather, grandfather, and father were conductors. In his youth, Guido built a reputation as a concertmaster and soloist with various orchestras, but later chose the path of conductor, violinist, and leader of his own orchestra.
While studying at the Maastricht Conservatory, Guido and his childhood friend, pop keyboard player Falco Borsboom, began looking for a way to combine the power of a classical orchestra with the rhythm and directness of pop music. That is how “Guido’s Orchestra” was born, later evolving into “The Maestro & The European Pop Orchestra.”
Over the course of his career, Guido has worked as a musical director, arranger, or creative partner with artists such as Andrea Bocelli, Lionel Richie, Diana Ross, Simply Red, DJ Afrojack, André Rieu, Eros Ramazzotti, and Alessandro Safina. Meanwhile, U.S. public television PBS introduced him and the orchestra through the “Love & Peace Concert,” describing the project as a special fusion of pop and classical music.
A love story that began with one voice
For more than twenty years, The Maestro has shared the stage with his wife, soprano Wendy Kokkelkoren. Their shared story began in 2001, when Guido was recommended to meet a young opera singer. He was struck by Wendy’s voice, and soon she became the orchestra’s permanent vocal soloist. Their professional chemistry quickly became personal: after a few months they were a couple, and in 2006 they were married at Pancratius Church in Heerlen.
Wendy is an academically trained opera singer. At the Maastricht Conservatory, she completed her solo singing studies with honors, and during her studies she performed in productions by Opera Zuid in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Verdi’s Rigoletto, Monteverdi’s Orfeo, and other works. Later she toured the United States and Canada and also performed in the presence of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.
On stage, Guido and Wendy create a duet of two different energies: he is an expressive conductor and violinist who can turn a solemn orchestral passage into a joke in an instant; she is a soprano who brings classical vocal technique into popular music arrangements. Off stage, they are raising two daughters, Emma-Sophie and Annabel, and call their family a musical family.
From goosebumps to a party
The artists themselves call their formula “pop meets classic.” Well-known melodies are given new orchestral arrangements and enriched with works composed by Guido Dieteren himself. The idea of the project is to create a full range of emotions - romance, tenderness, passion, and energy.
That is exactly what makes the show special: in one moment the orchestra sounds monumental, a few minutes later it shifts into a pop rhythm, and in the next episode the audience is already laughing at the dialogue between The Maestro and the musicians. This is orchestral music of a high level that is not afraid to be accessible and entertaining.
The only concert in Latvia - at the peak of the Christmas season
The Riga concert will be designed as a large Christmas arena show with “The European Pop Orchestra,” Wendy Kokkelkoren, vocal soloists, special arrangements, a holiday repertoire, and a visual stage concept.
20 December falls right at the peak of the Christmas season - just four days before Christmas Eve. “Christmas Show: When Classical Music Jokes!” is intended not only as a concert, but as an evening after which the audience goes home with a holiday feeling, energy, and a smile.
“The Maestro & The European Pop Orchestra - Christmas Show: When Classical Music Jokes!” in Riga will be the only concert of the project in Latvia. The entire holiday program will be experienced in one evening at Xiaomi Arena in Riga. Tickets are sold by “Biļešu Serviss” - bilesuserviss.lv.
