Train

Performance

By rail in pursuit of money!

We once had a railway connection with Europe. In the 1930s, anyone with 200 lats in their pocket was offered the chance to travel by train from Riga to Berlin without changing trains. In our story, life-changing money, just as today, was hidden in Europe back then too! But whose wallet will the coveted piece land in?

On a summer evening at Riga Station, six passengers meet on the Berlin train. For one, the 200 lats needed for the trip are just a drop in the ocean of money; for another, they are hard-earned savings. The train has not yet crossed Latvia’s border when the characters in the story realize that all six passengers are bound by an exciting and mysterious message: a will will be read in Berlin, and someone will inherit dizzying wealth. But one more thing also becomes clear: the fewer passengers who make it to Berlin, the greater the chance of receiving the impressive money...

The crime comedy 'Train' was written by Latvian playwright Lelde Stumbre at the request of director Kārlis Anitens. Although the theme of a train has inspired many dramatic works, the director preferred to create an original play in order to combine light entertainment with a discussion of the big and happy railway story in Latvia.

This is the second production in the "East Border" trilogy "Bus. Train. Plane." Although the events and characters in "Bus" and "Train" seem unrelated, the trilogy’s third work, "Plane" (premiering in September 2025), will provide a surprising answer about the interconnection of all three stories’ characters, even though the events are separated by more than 100 years of time and space.
