God Leaves Johann: Life Goes On
The musician through the ages is a cosmopolitan seeker of belonging and truth
By bringing together actors, musicians, and cultural workers from Latvia, Greece, Lithuania, Italy, and Austria, an enthusiastic team has been formed that offers audiences a contemporary and innovative cultural experience - an interplay of baroque music and puppet theatre - the performance "God Leaves Johann: Life Goes On".
“At the end of the 17th century, the unknown yet talented German violinist and composer Johann Fischer decides to seek inspiration in the Baltic lands, in present-day Latvia. His journey through Jelgava and Riga prompts a fresh look at the essence of music and its invisible connection to the human inner world - fame, inspiration, immortality, and, in the deepest sense, memory itself. Sometimes greater forces, which people consider worthy of worship and above us, speak in a language understood only by those below. One thing is clear. Just like music, living also means movement. And life goes on with steps that are faster than those taken by people or gods.” Helias Dzimoulakis
“These are my observations and reflections that created the desire to cast this theme into a story in the language of music and puppet theatre - there are so many Latvian talents in our generation who seek and also find themselves as musicians and people in various countries around the world, away from home. The 17th century in the life of the young composer Johann Fischer and the 21st century in the lives of our fellow human beings - we are the same seekers and discoverers of our own truth. In the production "God Leaves Johann: Life Goes On," these inner and outer journeys will unfold through the synergy of baroque music and visual theatre. This story is entirely fictional, apart from the main milestones of Johann Fischer’s biography and the guiding motif that the musician through the ages is a cosmopolitan seeker of belonging and truth.” Laura Šarova
