Fashion Show “Sew the Future” in the Old Swimming Pool in Valmiera
On 15 October at 3: 00 p.m., the closing fashion show of the project “Sew the Future: Start with Your Own Shirt” will take place in the old swimming pool of Valmiera Pārgauja State Gymnasium.
The fashion show will feature T-shirts that participants in the competition “Sew the Future: Start with Your Own Shirt” have given a second life. They were created in textile upcycling workshops held throughout September at the Nature and Technology Park “Urda” in cooperation with designers from the creative sustainable fashion platform “Bourzma”. In the workshops, young people transformed T-shirts they had already worn, giving them a new look and value, and also gained hands-on experience of different ways to redesign clothing and extend the life of textiles.
Designers and models from “Bourzma” will also take part in the fashion show, and this will be the sustainable platform’s first show outside Riga. The special guest at the event will be musician Esmeralda.
Visitors are welcome from 2: 30 p.m., when they will have the chance to take part in a T-shirt heat-transfer printing workshop. We invite you to bring your own T-shirt! Refreshments from Limpo will also be available.
Textile consumption in Europe continues to place a significant burden on the environment. On average, one European Union resident consumes about 19 kilograms of textiles per year, while around 12 kilograms of clothing per person ends up as waste every year. That is why it is increasingly important not only to sort textiles properly, but also to extend the life of clothing by repairing, transforming, and finding new uses for it before buying something new. Admission to the event is free.
